barong tagalog x valentino?

I was surfing the web earlier when I stumbled upon the blog Dressed Up For Armageddon. On the homepage was an entry on the Paris Fashion Week Spring 2012 Collection; curious, I clicked it. As I was scrolling down to see the pictures from different fashion houses (just two per house/designer), I was surprised when I saw the pictures from the Valentino runway because they resembled the Barong Tagalog.

The Barong Tagalog is like the Philippine national costume for men. It is also often considered as formal wear for males in the Philippines, a practice that was made popular by former President Ramon Magsaysay (the next five pictures are from Google).

I wanted to see the other clothes from the Valentino collection for spring next year so I searched the web for the other pictures and found these, in addition to the pieces above, at Style Bistro:

I don't know if Valentino designed these himself or if these were by some other designer for his brand. I don't know either if whoever designed these got inspiration from our very own Barong Tagalog or if it was purely coincidental. But yeah, I think it would be nice to see some Barong Tagalog-esque mini dresses next year.

  1. I am glad you posted this. It's time that our very own Barong Tagalog to shine in the fashion world. When you are away from home, every tiny detail about where you come from becomes a source of pride and I came to realize, I will always be a Filipino in words and in deeds wherever life takes me. Thanks again:)

  2. Hello!

I'm still on the lookout for write-ups regarding these pieces from the Valentino collection, just to confirm if these were really inspired by our Barong Tagalog. Either way, if you're a Filipino or familiar with the Barong Tagalog, it's quite hard to deny the resemblance.

Thanks for dropping by. Happy blogging! :-)
